ALL THE NEWS TO KEEP YOU FIT
| GOOD NEWS ABOUT CANCER More
women with Breast cancer may be able to avoid total mastectomies than in the past. A
recent study from the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel project has found that
if women undergo chemotherapy before surgery to remove cancerous tumors, they may be able
to have a lumpectomy (where the lump and a bit of the surrounding tissue are removed).
Researchers found that if chemotherapy was given first, tumor size was reduced in 80% of
women. as a result, more women had a lumpectomy rather than a mastectomy. In the case of
women with tumors less that 5.1 centimeters, there was a 175% increase in their chances of
having a lumpectomy. this indicates that presurgery chemotherapy benefits women whose
tumors are caught early. Alumpectomy is usually followed by radiations. Women with Breast
Cancer should discuss all options with their Doctors before undergoing surgery. |

Smoking Weakens
Hearts
During exercise, some smoker's heart may fail to kickinto gear the same way
non-smokers'hearts do. Smokers with an impaired heart-rate response time may be at four
times greater risk of heaving a heart attack or dying than non-smokers with normal heart
rate response. Michael Lauer, M.D., lead author of the steady, from the Cleveland clinic,
nicotine impairs smokers' hearts, causing them to be less responsive to stimuli.
Regardless of a smoker'sfitness level, a slowed heart rate (defined as failure to reach
the target heart rate) is dangerous. Dr Lauer recommends tha all smokers quit, especially
those who have an impaired response. If you smoke, consult with your Doctorto see if you
have this poor heart-rate response. |
